Hi, Today, we begin a new series on Mental Models—so you can move forward with business clarity. In This Issue:
- Mental Models: why you need them.
- One-Way vs. Two-Way Door takes you from uncertain to 100% confident.Â
- Start real growth in our new course by learning instead of reacting.
Why it matters: Playing the game of business at a high level (as a consultant, executive, and founder) requires elevated decision making ability. This model helps you make the right decision, quickly.

Here's a new lens for your mental camera.
I don’t remember when I first learned about mental models, per se, but I’m obsessed with case studies and retrospectives. You’re not just a creator, you’re a CEO of your business. And running a successful business requires elevated decision making ability.
Think of each model as a new lens for your mental camera—shifting your view until you truly see the situation clearly. |

| | A One-Way vs. Two-Way DoorÂ
This is one of Jeff Bezos' (and my) favorite mental models: One-Way vs. Two-Way Door Framework.Â
One-Way Door Decisions: These decisions are irreversible or very difficult to reverse—once you walk through the door, there’s no easy way back. Examples: Hiring a full-time employee, signing a long-term lease, or launching a major product overhaul. Approach: These decisions demand careful thought, planning, and input from key stakeholders. Take your time and allocate sufficient resources.
Two-Way Door Decisions: These are reversible. If you walk through the door and don’t like what you see, you can step back and change direction without much trouble. Examples: Running a marketing campaign, trying a new software tool, or testing a new pricing model. Approach: Make these decisions quickly. Take action, evaluate the results, and pivot if needed. Don’t let analysis paralysis hold you back.

Take Action: One-Way + Two-Way in Your Business
Now you can assess which decisions deserve serious deliberation and which ones can be made and adjusted quickly.
Here's how you can practice:Â - Create a Decision Matrix:
- List out your upcoming decisions and categorize them as one-way or two-way doors.
- Empower Your Team:
- Delegate two-way door decisions to your team. Encourage them to act fast and learn through experimentation.
- Allocate Resources Wisely:
- Reserve more time, budget, and attention for the one-way door decisions that have long-term impact.
- Use Pilot Programs and Trials:
- When unsure, treat a decision as a two-way door. Test on a small scale before fully committing.
- Reduce Overthinking:
- Set time limits on how long you’ll spend analyzing two-way door decisions to avoid unnecessary delays.
A recent example for us: One-Way Door: Migration to Mighty Networks. This major, high-investment move aligns with our long-term strategy and required lots of consideration, discussion and clear communication—no easy way back.
Two-Way Door: Brand refresh. This update is flexible, allowing for adjustments, with minimal risk if we need to pivot. So we made decisions quickly. |
